I. Answer the following questions briefly:
1. Mention the latitude and longitude of Assam.
Ans: Assam is situated between 90°-96°E longitude and 24°-28°N latitude.
2. What was the treaty of Yandabo?
Ans: As per the Treaty of Yandabo, Assam became a British protectorate in 1826 AD.
3. Why is Assam called a 'landlocked' state?
Ans: Assam is a landlocked state. It is surrounded by Arunachal Pradesh in the north, Nagaland, and Manipur in the east, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram in the south, and West Bengal in the west. Assam also shares its borders with the neighbouring countries. namely Bhutan in the north and Bangladesh in the south.
4. Give a brief account of the climate change of Assam?
Ans: Assam experiences all the major seasons. The four seasons include summer, monsoon, winter, and spring. The average temperature ranges from 29°C and 16°C.
The monsoon season is from June to October, Heavy rains occur in the upper and lower parts of Assam. However, central areas experience lesser rainfall. The high altitude hilly areas are cooler than the plains throughout the year.
5. Mention the crops grown in Assam.
Ans: Both food crops and crash crops are grown across Assam. The main food crop of the state is rice. The cash crops grown in Assam include sugar cane, potatoes, pulses, cotton, etc. Moreover, jute is grown widely throughout the state.
